Orange County just got its newest Natural Light Photography Studio!

Is this real life?

Our brand new natural light studio is officially open! What does this mean?

It means we are really able to fully elevate our client experience and our client options. It also means we have something really special to share with the Orange County Photography community - a brand new space where other photographers can come and photograph their own clients! YES - we are sharing this beautiful space.

For many years we have rented other studios to accommodate our brand clients, and even family clients who have wanted that studio look. It's been so incredible to be able to borrow space from others and share in those communities - but I found the need for something closer to home. I always dreamed of opening my own space and when the opportunity presented itself this year, I jumped on it.

After 4 months of negotiations, finding a contractor, losing a contractor, finding a new contractor - we gutted the space and turned it into a stunning studio. We now have a 1450 sqft (500 of that is shoot space) studio in Yorba Linda and it is GORGEOUS.

Can you say, variety? All of those different looks are from our 500sqft photography studio in Yorba Linda. Our client came in for a half day brand session and we went CRAZY.

We have a 6 roller electric backdrop system that has 6 different color seamless backdrops. Our studio also boasts vaulted skylit ceilings with light floors and bright walls so that natural light coming in bounces beautifully and evenly. Not a single artificial light was used during that session.

And of course I can't forget to share Santa with you... We designed a beautiful, classic Santa set in our studio this season and booked clients across 4 different dates. Printed Photos of Your Kids Affects Their Emotional Wellbeing

I know you think you need the digital files...

But did you know that only 2% of the clients who come through my doors for the first time, when asked what they did with the digital files from their previous session say they actually printed something?

Think about it. When was the last time you printed a photo? I get it... we want to share on social media. We THINK having the digital files is how we keep our photos forever. Can I tell you something else? This year alone (and it's only March) - I've had 3 clients from 8 + years ago come back and ask me for their Wedding photos again because their computer crashed and... they didn't get an album, they didn't print their photos, they lost everything.

Lucky for them - I am one of the most paranoid Photographers in Orange County... maybe the world... and I still had their files on my cloud and my server. BUT ... I'm not legally obligated to keep them. My contract states that I will hold onto them for one year. They got lucky this time! They're also all so sweet that they offered to pay me for them a second time. But that's not my style. I love my clients, and I am happy to save the day when I can.

Now here's the really good stuff: Studies such as the 1975 study by Ammermann & Fryrear have shown that children who regularly see photos displayed in their homes tend to have higher self-esteem than children who don't. Psychologist David Krauss emphasizes that these photos reinforce a child's sense of self-worth! I'm not done... Displaying family portraits also creates a visual reminder that a child is a valued member of their family and it fosters a strong sense of belonging and security which are crucial for healthy emotional development.

Furthermore, looking at family photos helps kids understand their place in their family and develop a sense of family identity which is particularly important during times of transition like blending families or adoption. TOUCHING AND FEELING physical photos evokes a stronger emotional connection and helps facilitate memory recall. (Is your mind blown yet?? I'll keep going...)

Experts Vickey Easa and Dr. Jaclyn Gulotta express that consistently seeing family portraits helps children feel important and valuable. Is that not what we want for our children every day of their lives? This also assists in the development of a strong core belief system that will aid them throughout their lives.

This. Is. So. Freaking. COOL! I nerd out on things like this because it reinforces why I do what I do. We already know that photography is important. There are hundreds, maybe thousands of family Photographers in Orange County that will take your photos. Then what? Where do they go?

YOU are the Brand

You Are The Brand

Gone are the days of boring corporate headshots... And while, yes - AI can make some REALLY legit looking headshots of you appear out of thin air... I'm here to rant about the power of real photography, and why it's not going anywhere.

First, let me start by stating the obvious: AI cannot capture your authenticity no matter how hard it tries. YOU know it's fake, most of US know it's fake - and is that what you want your children to look back on one day? Computer-generated images of you? Hard. Pass. I don't care if it's "just a headshot for work" - if it's not real, it's not you. Your spirit cannot be captured in AI.

Don't get me wrong - I'm a big fan of AI for a lot of reasons, but image-creation AI actually hurts my soul. Not because I'm worried it will replace my job, I have zero fear of that. It hurts my soul because photography used to be evidence - proof of experiences, proof of HISTORY. If it was photographed, or filmed - you couldn't deny it happened. There was evidence... and thanks to AI, we can no longer trust a photograph or a video... and as someone who is a deeply passionate photographer, that truly crushes me. So in case you were wondering, the answer is yes... I am hardcore ANTI-AI for imagery and video creation. I am pro-real life, real authenticity, real human emotions. But I'll take the AI remove tool, because that works pretty well for getting those pesky beach-goers out of the background of my family sessions on the beach.

I'm going to circle back to head shots and branding now... I once heard this line and it has stuck with me, "Marketing is asking someone to dinner. Branding is the reason they say yes."

That statement makes so much sense. This article written about me and published by World Reporter is chalk-full of great tips and advice about personal brand photography. Give it a read if you want to some inspiration!

As an Orange County Brand Photographer - a true brand photographer, I really stress the importance with my clients about blending professional and personal into your brand. We dive deep into your business, your messaging, and your core values so that we can tie them together and brand YOU. It's so easy to want to hide behind your business, your products, your work - but the truth is, the most important element of your business - is YOU. So with a professional brand session, we aren't going to let you hide. And please - get out of here with, "I just need a couple quick headshots." That's not what we do ;-)

Why not? Because personal branding is DIFFERENT. Personal branding in Orange County and around the world - is about YOU. Which of the five will you be most likely to purchase from? (PS - that girl is my client @your.esthi.christal - go check out her feed and you'll know exactly what I mean.)

I'll answer for you... the one who shows her face and you know things about her. Why is that? Because you feel like you know her, you like her, and this makes you trust her more than the others AND want to invest in her products. THIS is the power of personal brand photography... and this is why it's different.

Stories of Motherhood

"I almost died giving birth...twice."

"I tried for 8 years to complete my family. I was told I should just be happy with my one child, that I was selfish for wanting more, that I was too old... and I finally got my happy ending through IVF at the age of 45."

"I was told I couldn't have children."

"I raised my own siblings and have dedicated my life to breaking the cycle of abuse."

"My 15-month-old baby boy was killed by a caregiver."

"I felt like my brain was on fire."

"I started my own business and shifted to homeschooling my children in the middle of a global pandemic."

"Mother's Day was always painful for me as a single Mom because no one thought to celebrate me."

"My daughter came to me and told me she wanted to end her life."

"It's a constant battle of not being enough at work, and not being enough at home."

"I actually miss the sleepless nights and the early mornings when we just cuddled together. It was hard in the moment, but now I miss it. No one really prepares you for that."

These are parts of the many Motherhood stories I have heard over the years. These are only a few of the inspirational people I have met who set me on the path to this project, Stories of Motherhood.

As a photographer living and working in Orange County I have seen a lot... I wont say I've seen or heard it all because that's just not possible. But I will say that I have heard stories that have moved me to ugly tears. I have cried with my family portrait clients, I have celebrated with them and most importantly - I have documented their lives in such beautiful and meaningful ways. I built my business as a wedding photographer and we quickly became a sought-after studio in Orange County capturing more than 100 weddings annually. I built an amazing team of talented photographers and three years into it, it was my turn to plan a wedding!

In that time, my sister became a Mom for the first time - making me the worlds most proud Auntie. I fell so deeply in love with my niece that everyone who saw me or knew that I spent a whole day with her every single week was like "When is it your turn to become a Mom!?" The more I heard that phrase, the more I came to resist it. I took care of my niece for 10 hours every single Tuesday ( #tuesdayswithadalynn ) and got a real hard glimpse of what Motherhood would be like and while I loved her endlessly... I also grew to love and appreciate my "me time" and started to think that maybe I wasn't meant to be a Mom. MAYBE... I was just meant to be the worlds greatest Auntie.

Then she gave birth to my nephew... and now I had two kids for 10 hours every Tuesday. I was pretty content at this point with auntie-life. Luckily for me, my husband was on the same page. We were "maybe" going to become parents... or "maybe" we'd buy a boat. We just weren't totally sold either way.

Then one day it hit me. I think it was the first time my sister booked a "first" experience for my niece and nephew that I wasn't invited to go on with them. She didn't exclude me intentionally, or to be mean or anything like that... it was just HER life and HER family. Realizing I wasn't entitled to experience all of their "firsts" was a bit of a gut punch.. or a reality check, if you will. I thought, "Well, shit. Maybe I should have my own kids if I want to revel in every single experience..."

I sat with that for a few weeks and it didn't go away. The thing was, I was still on the fence about becoming a mother. But what was hitting me so hard, was that I was also still on the fence about NOT becoming a mother. I started to imagine what my life would look like if I never had my own children... and truth be told, I realized I was itching for the weekend Mom's club at the soccer games, the vacations... and weirdly - THE GRANDCHILDREN I could potentially have one day. I am laughing out loud as I write this but it's true - if I wanted the opportunity to be a Grandma some day, I needed to become a Mom. Still quite on the fence, I somehow managed to talk my husband off the fence and we decided to start our family.

I could go on for ages and tell you my entire story - but maybe I'll do that in parts. For now, spoiler alert - I was fortunate to have two healthy pregnancies, zero miscarriages, zero infertility battles, two PERFECT daughters three years apart. My pregnancies were not a walk in the park. I didn't love being pregnant... but I loved what my body was able to do. I had the most excruciating breast-feeding experience I've ever heard of (just try and top me, I dare ya)... and as a Mom I have faced a lot of loud battles, and quiet ones too.

I wouldn't trade one ounce or one second of my experience or this life I have built for anything in the world. There is nothing I am more proud of than being a Mom to my daughters, literally nothing. Watching my niece and nephew came close to preparing me, but still NOTHING could prepare me for this adventure I am on. No one could have expressed it to me (although my Mom and my sister sure did try) or said anything that could have even come close to helping me grasp what Motherhood would be like or feel like. But I know, that without a shadow of a doubt, any of the Mother's I know have a deep connection to one another, and a deep understanding of the battles we each face. Our battles are different, but the sisterhood of motherhood binds us like NO other sisterhood could. So even if we don't experience all of the same things - we just "get it" in a way that no one else does.

This journey lead me to open up so many more doors in my photography business. While I still love being a wedding photographer, I developed a deep connection to photographing families in Orange County and all over Southern California. The importance of capturing and documenting our lives as Mothers, our connection to our children and the journey we embark on when we become Mothers has become undeniably monumental to me. I will say, too, that it isn't just about photographing families or photographing Moms with their children - but making sure it's done in a way that truly shows the bond we share, the love we exchange and the authentic personalities that are within us and our children... AND preserving it. SorryNotSorry my friends, but if you want to work with me - you're going to learn to appreciate the value of print, of wall collections, and of albums you can hold in your hands and flip through with your children and grandchildren. Because what an absolute waste it is to leave them buried on a hard drive somewhere, or shared once or twice on social media and then forgotten. Our memories are priceless and they deserve to be preserved and held in our hands.

Lindsay & Jesse at The University Club

A Day of Perfection

Ok, Lindsay and Jesse's wedding at the University Club in Irvine was everything a celebration should be – fun, heartfelt, and full of genuine joy. The day kicked off at the super stylish AC Hotel , where the pre-wedding energy in their gorgeous bar area was electric. Imagine giggling bridesmaids, maybe a few happy tears, and a whole lot of smiles and love for Lindsay.

And can we talk about Lindsay's dress? It was absolutely stunning! She rocked a gorgeous gown with a clever twist – a detachable train that she could remove for the reception. Talk about a total bridal boss move! Plus, her bouquet by Olivia's Mum was a burst of beautiful blooms that perfectly complemented the whole look.

The ceremony at the University Club was pure sweetness. You could just feel the love between these two as they exchanged vows, maybe even sneaking in a few inside jokes. Their smiles were seriously contagious!

Gather ’round, friends, and let me regale you with the tale of Ashley & Noah’s wild engagement session in Laguna Beach!

It was set to be an idyllic day at one of my favorite Laguna beaches, but Mother Nature had her own plans. You see, I’d overlooked a tiny detail: the tide. On this summer day, it was so high that our trio turned into an Olympic-worthy relay team, darting between crashing waves, and leaping over watery traps to reach a “safe” zone. We stashed our stuff on the shore’s edge, praying Neptune would spare us. My lone sandal, however, had a close call, saved only by a kind-hearted beachgoer’s quick reflexes.

But wait, the plot thickens! Mid-session, my camera decided to play a prank and sneakily switched to a 2-second timer. Panic bubbled up as I imagined all sorts of catastrophic hardware failures. There I was, pleading with Ashley & Noah to hold their wet, sandy poses in the middle of surging waves, while secretly imploring the photography gods to guide my trembling fingers. Once I discovered the sneaky timer switch, relief washed over me. I burst out laughing, sharing my momentary plight with the couple.

Smo oth sailing from then on, right? Not quite! In my post-session euphoria, I accidentally turned into a quasi-thief. Their phones and keys found their way into my bag, and I, forgetting my own rule of returning belongings post-session, made a brisk exit. Can you imagine their chase, trying to flag down the oblivious photographer making away with their valuables? It’s a reminder that even 13 years in the business doesn’t exempt you from those ‘off’ days. But hey, a true professional always delivers, knows how to roll with the punches, and, most importantly, can laugh at the unexpected twists and turns.

SIX YEARS OF SHY HEART STUDIOS

I can’t believe we launched Shy Heart Studios just over six years ago now. I’ve never focused on our anniversary until this year…. year six. That was not intentional, I just didn’t think much of it and was always too busy in January every year to give it any thought.

I have been photographing weddings for 12 years! That’s an even crazier number to me. In those first 6 years I picked up a few shoots on my own, but mostly worked for other photographers and even had a business partnership for a couple of years. I was grappling with whether to put my energy into someone else’s business, or pursue my own path. Even though there was a “partnership”, that business belonged to someone else and I was never in control of anything. I thought, at the time, that I needed a boss. I needed someone to keep me accountable. I didn’t really feel like I had the ability to be anyone’s boss, let alone my own. But as time went on, I realized I was so wrong about that. There was something unsettled within me throughout those years with that “partnership”; something missing; something that just didn’t feel right.

In 2014 the door to my future opened. I ran through it… I didn’t have time to put on running shoes, I went barefoot, and had no idea where I was going, but I knew I had to just keep running. I feared blisters on my feet would stop me, but instead calluses formed and protected me. Throughout that year I just went for it and by the end of it, I was building a team. In January of 2015 Shy Heart Studios was officially launched and we have never looked back.

Most businesses fail in the first 5 years. This is probably not news to anyone… I actually never worried about this. I never thought for a second, once we got moving, that we’d fail. I did, of course, fear that when I first went running barefoot out that door… but once the momentum picked up, I didn’t ever see it stopping. Maybe that was naivety, or perpetual ignorant optimism… or maybe it’s what kept me moving. I don’t know! What I do know is that we made it through those first 5 years but in year 5 we hit a hurdle that I wouldn’t have anticipated in a million years: COVID-19.

How did we survive last year? How are we still going? In large part we are still going because of the way I prepared my business for disaster. I never thought it would actually happen, but I prepared for it anyway. I had many tears in 2020 over many things including fear, anxiety, stress over my business. I felt like I was failing. I felt like I was losing something I worked so hard to build. My dream. But I wasn’t. I didn’t. I had a rock bottom moment and the stubborn side of me slapped myself across the face, and said get the hell up and keep it moving. The other large part of our lack of failure – was my team. Namely, Elaine, Ann and Alex – my core team that works the inside and behind the scenes details of this business. They kept going and kept helping this company move through such an incredibly difficult time

The future for Shy Heart Studios is bright. I am more focused and have more energy than I ever have. I’m excited about what is to come, and can’t wait to share our continued journey and growing success.

I can guarantee you that these women are as wonderful as they look. Don’t we have a beautiful team!? I am so proud of each of them and so grateful to them. Two of our 2nd photographers were unable to make the session, but are just as wonderful and valued as all of these ladies.

ONWARD & UPWARD

After a year like 2020 I’ve decided there’s only one way to go… and that way is up. Bigger. Better. More successful. There are no other options.

I’ll be the first to admit that I lagged HARD in the inspiration department in 2020. The Pandemic ravaged my business like a hurricane, leaving me on the top of a car floating down the road not sure where or how to jump to safety. At first I just thought, hang tight… enjoy the unplanned river float… The waters will stop rising eventually, and the car will start again no problem. It can hurricane forever, right? In a couple of weeks and we’ll be just fine. I’ve got some supplies to hold me over…

Then the summer creeped up and we were ready to get back to work in July. But all of the sudden the numbers spiked again and one by one weddings dropped like flies off our calendar. As the year continued on we got our hopes up multiple times and were let down again. That roller coaster ride had me all over the place and really just not knowing what to do or how to proceed. I knew it wasn’t a matter of IF we bounced back, it was just a matter of when… but it had me feeling like I was stuck in the mud and unable to move forward. I found myself signing contracts and thinking “Yeah that wedding wont happen…” and being right about that more often that I’d like to admit. The negativity was just overflowing and growth is really hard to achieve when you’re feeling down in the dumps like that.

Then one morning some ideas started popping into my head before 4am. I started planning, and talking about my ideas with people who I love that are so good at letting me share and who only further inspire me in these times… and the ideas haven’t stopped. The inspiration is back!! I have big plans for my business and I finally feel like I have a focused vision again. 2021 is the year of growth. I can feel it. I’m already rebuilding the engine on that car that carried me through the flood like a life preserver, and it’s going to take me further than it ever has. Stay tuned.

MICRO WEDDINGS – ORANGE COUNTY

Prior to 2020 had you ever heard the words “Micro Wedding” ? No? that’s because 2020, and the global pandemic invented them!

So what exactly is a “Micro Wedding” in Orange County and the rest of the country, and why is it trending? It’s exactly what it sounds like – a highly scaled down version of the traditional wedding. It’s not quite a regular wedding, and not quite an elopement, it falls right in the middle.

In the beginning of the pandemic everyone was just postponing their weddings by a few months. However, we all quickly came to realize that this chaos was going to last longer than anticipated, and many people stopped wanting to postpone and began preferring to find a compromise. Enter: Micro Weddings. I don’t know who coined the term, but it’s cute right?

Yes, there are still a lot of people opting to just postpone. But the vast majority is beginning to realize that there is no telling WHEN weddings will get back to “normal” and they don’t want to put their lives, and family planning on hold. Many within that vast majority are also realizing… that this has been the answer to their stress over planning a big wedding that they didn’t actually want! If you’ve been there, you know. If you are recently engaged, you also know… if you’re on your way to that sweet spot some day – let us tell you… Weddings can QUICKLY become about everyone around you, and before you know it your guest count is over 200 people and you only really want like 20 of those people there… but you’re trying to make everyone happy.

That is the way the wedding planning story goes for so many people. Too many people, if you ask me. And if there is any bright spot in all of this darkness in relation to weddings – it’s that for so many people, their forced Micro Wedding turned out to be exactly what they have wanted deep down all along: a highly intimate and romantic affair with those who are truly nearest and dearest to their hearts. The pandemic has given some people the excuse they needed to drastically cut down their guest count!

Whatever is in store for your wedding in 2021 or 2022… we are excited to capture it. Whether that’s a petite gathering where we can maximize your photography time, or a big giant extravaganza (pandemic permitting) with elephants and belly dancers – we can’t wait to tell your story. We are very much looking forward to getting back to normal here with Southern California wedding photography, but in the meantime we are very much enjoying these safe little intimate events. There is beauty in waiting for that big giant party, and there is beauty in adjusting your plans to meet the times we are in.

A CHANGE IN WEATHER, A CHANGE OF PACE

TA couple of weeks ago I was stumped on what to blog about, so I put a poll out on Instagram to see if anyone would share some things they’d like to have me touch on in my Blog. I got some really great suggestions! I still ran out of time to blog that day… and the next… and the next… but here we are. I finally have found some time!

The first suggestion I’m using is: How does the change in weather inspire your sessions?

I have to say that the change in weather inspires me in life in general. I get very sick of the summer heat every year and with a toddler, plus the pandemic, this year that has been ten fold. It has been a real challenge to beat the heat anywhere but inside our house. So having the weather FINALLY start to drop into the 80’s is an absolute God send. We can literally just go play outside… as much as I am ready for bundled up clothing and hot latte’s, I’m thankful just to feel like I can take her outside in the afternoon and let her play. I start coming up with fun ideas of ways to entertain her outside and fun things we can do together.

From a photography stand point, this year in particular I’ve been exceptionally inspired. With the change in weather comes family portrait season. As someone who is primarily a wedding photographer, I get VERY excited for the change of pace that the fall traditionally brings to my business. This year, as you know, I haven’t captured a traditional wedding in a while, so just being out working with people in this beautiful weather gets me excited about what I do all over again. It has been hard to stay inspired when we have no idea when we’ll get back to the traditional days of weddings. However, this season lifts that dark cloud a little bit for me. As a Mom myself, I love family sessions more than I ever have before. For the next couple of months I get to see smiling faces (even if they don’t get to see mine behind my mask), and play and chat and enjoy time with these families on a regular basis and feel like I have a job again! Just this boost in energy for me, this time of year, inspires me to expand my marketing, come up with new fun ideas, and just gets my creative juices flowing. I can’t tell you how wonderful that feeling is after so many months of disappointment as our country continues to combat covid-19 unsuccessfully. While many businesses have been lucky enough to be able to re-open SAFELY, the wedding industry is still at a major disadvantage and will be one of the very last, I believe, to fully recover. So in the meantime I am inspired by cooler weather and cute-ass kids, sweet little baby bumps, and dogs in costume!!

WHY DO YOU CHARGE SO MUCH?

This is a super insulting question to ask anyone in the creative field. So just …. don’t. Instead – read this blog and share it with those who would like a better understanding of what goes into pricing with things like wedding photography or family photography.

This blog post topic is brought to you by way of inspiration from my cousin �� I was not at all offended when he asked me about photography pricing and why it’s so high, because he’s family and I know his question came out of a real desire to understand. But this immediately made me thing that I should talk about it. So here we are!

What goes into pricing for photography? No. Despite what you might think, it is not just an arbitrary number we come up with. It’s not ego… well maybe a little bit is ego, but well deserved ego ��

Here is how professional photographers build their pricing and decide what they NEED to charge in order for a session to be worth their time, effort and talent:

Factor 1: The basics.

Education. Not everyone can check this box with an actual degree, but most photographers can check this box with time and effort they have put in, and money they have spent educating themselves. Conventions, online courses, in person classes, etc. You might have a natural eye for beauty, but that doesn’t mean s-h-i-t if you don’t know how to apply it, or how to use your gear. I personally have a Bachelor of Fine Art in Photography – so for me, the education part is all encompassing. I have a degree in my field, and I continue to spend money and time furthering my education and constantly am learning new techniques, equipment, and also – what they don’t teach you in art school… HOW TO RUN A BUSINESS.

Factor 2: Overhead.

What does it cost to run a photography business? This might shock you. I don’t often share these numbers but I think it’s important. Every photographer’s overhead varies. But there are things that across the board, every professional photographer HAS to spend money on. These things include, but are not limited to: cost of equipment, cleaning/maintenance of equipment, insurance of equipment, liability insurance, contract/booking programs, editing & culling subscriptions, computer equipment, editors, back up systems, studio space, ADVERTISING, website building/design/upkeep,…. the list goes on and on. If you are a full time photographer – guess what… none of these bills stopped during Covid. So keep that in mind. With little to nothing coming in, all of these bills still had to get paid. Overhead for a full time photography business can be upwards of $50,000.00 per year…

Factor 3: Experience / Talent…. TIME.

YES – these are extremely valuable. When you hire a professional, they know exactly what they are doing. They know what lighting, timing, posing, etc. to use at the drop of a hat. I am of the belief that our time is the most valuable thing we have to give to another person… because it’s the one thing we can’t get back. Let that sink in.

Factor 4: Value.

This is probably the most important thing that people miss when trying to understand what they are getting when they hire a professional photographer. The best way I can express it is with this scenario: Your house is on fire. All people and pets are safe. What is the first thing you grab to take with you after your loved ones are safe? MOST people would say, photographs, albums, or hard drives that hold their photos. Why is that? Because those images are your legacy. They’re your life story. They are your most prized possessions because they are all you have left after the moment is gone. One day the memories will fade, but the photos help reignite them. One day your kids will look at your wedding photos and probably have them in their own home… One day your kids will be graduating high school, college… in the blink of an eye, your babies will be grown up… and all you’ll have to remember the early days, are your photos. If THAT is not value to you…. then clearly you’re not a fan of photography �� To me, these times, these days, these memories – are all priceless. I should charge more ��

These four things are the majority of what goes into how we determine what we will charge. The question you have to ask yourself when making a decision to hire a professional photographer is, what will these images be worth to me 10 years from now? 20 years? What value will my children and grandchildren find in these? Divide the cost up by how many years you think you’ll cherish those images for. If it’s a lifetime… or two lifetimes… then it should be worth every penny. How many other things do you spend money on that last that long?

Well… this blog post was started a week ago. I stopped mid sentence to run to the hospital with my sister because they wanted to run a stress test on her because she was 9 months pregnant and the babies heart rate was a bit low at her appointment that day. They sent her home from the hospital that afternoon, but at 11pm that night we were back and it was baby time! My precious new little nephew was born just before 6am on Tuesday morning. It was a LONG night and my first night ever away from Brynlee. She was not happy about it and gave her Dad a run for his money.

Over the next couple of days I caught up on sleep as much as I could, and caught up on work too. By Saturday I had 4 client meetings… 3 of which ran smoothly, and the last of which had a wrench thrown in it because 10 minutes before my clients were to arrive I dislocated my shoulder and had to go to the Emergency Room. It has been one hell of a week to say the least. Because my fingers still work I’m able to type this post up with the keyboard in my lap as my sitter takes care of my sweet girl. The whole world can’t stop even if I want it to… unfortunately I can’t move my right arm much at all so I can’t be left alone with my baby. I can’t lift her, or my arm and it sucks… so I might as well blog! Thankfully my husbands boss is amazing and understanding and is very flexible so Randy is able to stay home this week until someone is here to help me. I am PRAYING that the ER doctor was correct and I only have to wear the sling until Thursday and can start lifting my sweet baby up on my own again. It is my truest form of torture in life right now not being able to scoop her up 10,000 times per day.

Aaaaanyway – let’s talk about mini sessions! I captured my first round of Mini’s of the season and have two more to go. I am also praying that my doctor clears me to shoot this weekend because I have another round of Mini’s to capture. Fingers crossed!

Family portraits often bring when them more stress than weddings from the clients side. Most commonly this happens with parents of small children obviously. They put so much time and effort into choosing outfits, and getting out the door to be on time and it’s chaotic and difficult… and then it’s hard for them to relax and enjoy the session. It’s hard not to – we all want the perfect holiday card right? I personally enjoy the most authentic or silly photos best when I get holiday cards from people. I never take our holiday cards seriously. I encourage you this year to just enjoy what you get no matter what it is. If your kid is constantly running out of the frame… just laugh it off. Flip them upside down, make them laugh – be silly, and just let it be what it is going to be. You are 10 times more likely to get a killer photo if you just PLAY!! Let’s all remember to play a little more… take the stress off ourselves and remember that no one’s life is picture perfect… so why NOT have an authentically chaotic photo for your holiday card? You’ll make everyone smile.
